Alamosa - PerformanceALAMOSA THE TWO YEAR OLD Trained by Peter and Kim McKay at Matamata, he was an electric two year old in 2006, winning the G1 Diamond Stakes (1200m), Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m), and placings in both the G1 Sires Produce (1400m) and Listed Welcome Stakes (1000m). ALAMOSA THE THREE YEAR OLD As a spring three year old he strung together a list of wins and placings in the G2 Hawkes Bay Guineas (1st), G2 Wellington Guineas (2nd), G1 2000 Guineas (2nd), G2 Avondale Guineas (1st), and G3 WRC Wellington Stakes (1st), before heading to the Group One Thorndon Mile. An emphatic victory here made Alamosa the first three year old in twenty years to win the Thorndon, and saw him crowned Champion three year old at the Mercedes Awards for that year. A month later saw him conclude his New Zealand Career with dominating win, this time at Weight for age, in the Group One Otaki Maori RC WFA Stakes. At 62kgs, Alamosa was rated the top three year old on New Zealand’s Free Handicaps. This rating saw him 1kg superior to AJC Derby winner Nom de Jeu and 1.5kg ahead of New Zealand Derby winner C’est le Guerre. ALAMOSA THE FOUR YEAR OLD His fourth birthday found him in Australia, under the tutelage of Mick Price at Caulfield, tasked with the target of attaining black type on that side of the Tasman. Alamosa duly obliged, triumphing in the Group One Toorak Handicap. He further enhanced his record with two placings at the G1 Orr Stakes (2nd) and G1 Futurity (3rd), both under weight for age conditions. |
