Race Record
Trained by Peter and Kim McKay at Matamata, Alamosa was an electric two-year-old in 2006. He trialled and won as a fresh faced two-year-old, and went on to win three of his first five starts including the Listed WRC Wellesley Stakes (1000m). He stamped his class in New Zealand’s only two Group One juvenile events, beating the best two-year-olds in the country in the Gr. 1 ARC Diamond Stakes (1200m), before coming from wide and near last on the turn to storm home for third in the Gr. 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
Alamosa commenced his spring three-year-old season with two convincing wins, the second in the Gr. 2 Hawkes Bay Guineas. Two second placings in the Gr. 2 Wellington Guineas and the Gr. 1 NZ 2000 Guineas followed the Hawkes Bay win, before he was back to his winning ways in the Gr. 2 Avondale Guineas. His raw ability was unquestionable at this stage and with this in mind he was set against the older horses for the first time. The result was emphatic with back to back Group One wins against New Zealand’s best milers. He became the first three-year-old in over 20 years to win the Gr. 1 Thorndon Mile, before producing a dazzling display in the Gr. 1 Otaki-Maori WFA Stakes to set a new track record in 1:32.7.
At 62kgs, Alamosa was rated the top three-year-old on the New Zealand Free Handicaps. This rating saw him 1kg superior to AJC Derby winner Nom de Jeu and 1.5kg ahead of New Zealand Derby winner C’est le Guerre.
Alamosa’s fourth birthday found him in Australia under the tutelage of Mick Price at Caulfield, the trainer tasked with obtaining Australian black-type for the horse before his retirement to stud. Alamosa duly obliged, triumphing over a capacity 18 horse field in the Gr. 1 MRC Toorak Handicap at Caulfield. He further enhanced his record with two placings in the Gr. 1 MRC Orr Stakes (2nd) and the Gr. 1 MRC Futurity (3rd), both under Weight-for-age conditions.
Alamosa beat the best in both New Zealand and Australia, winning to Group One level as a two- three- and four-year-old, and under Age Group, Handicap, and Weight-for-age conditions.
